New Year Dog Walking

When the weather is less than kind, the wind blowing a gale, the heavy rain is being blown horizontally and the sun refuses to put in an appearance it can require a lot of willpower to take your dogs out for their daily walkies.

You may even have dogs who are less than keen to venture outside themselves if the weather is looking wet and windy but, just to fit in with the whole New Year, fresh start, healthy living resolutions and all that, Plus 2 Dogs thought it would pass along the following motivating info from Heart Research UK on the benefits to all (including the pooch!) of getting out and enjoying a bracing winter walk, no matter what the weather...

  • Kick start the day with a heart healthy walk with your canine companion. Any brisk walk of at least 10 minutes can count towards your recommended 30 minutes a day and is equal to around 1,000 steps.
  • Up the pace of dog walks and reap the benefits in a reduced waistline and stronger heart.  Playing games like Frisbee and tug of war will keep that tail wagging and keep your heart working towards a healthier you.
  •  A dog can make the ideal running or cycling buddy. Unlike a friend or colleague, a man’s best friend won’t cancel on you, give excuses, moan about the weather or slack off the pace.  Some dogs are more obedient than others however you do need to take care if you’re running or cycling with a lead.
  • Interaction with your four legged friend helps boosts endorphins and lowers stress levels, which is great news for your mental health as well as your blood pressure.

If you don’t own a dog then why not offer to help at your nearest shelter for abandoned and mistreated dogs?  Having a commitment will help you maintain the regular exercise that your heart and your new found friend need.

Dog Walking - National Trails

Dog walking ideas from Plus 2 Dogs

There are currently 15 National Trails in England and Wales, with 4 trails in Scotland, and these carefully managed long distance trails can be walked in many different ways:

*Some people walk the whole length over the course of a weekend or week, using the trail as a walking holiday.

*Some people share the goal of completing the full route but do so in more manageable little sections and eventually complete all parts over a few months or even years.

*Another option is to make a day trip out of walking just one part of a route and enjoy a great day of walking with your canine companions - friends and family welcome too!  You could choose a section of a trail to walk from A to B, arranging for a lift from a friend or using public transport to get back to your start point, alternatively you could plan a circular walk if the trail links in with other footpaths or you could just retrace your steps and enjoy the scenery from the other direction!

The National Trails website outlines the various trails and gives details of where you can find out more specific details from various trail officers.
